Teak Grades – Why Do They Matter?

Teak is one of the best materials for garden furniture. It is naturally resistant to the effects of the weather and is not vulnerable to termites like other types of wood. Therefore it does not need any kind of protection in the form of vanishes and paints nor coverings and can be left outdoors all year round regardless of the weather conditions because it also withstands the temperature extremes. In addition to its outstanding resistance to the harsh outdoor conditions, teak is also highly valued for its durability as it can last a lifetime with virtually no care.

Many people tend to be unaware that not all pieces of teak garden furniture have the above mentioned qualities. This is due to the fact that there are three teak grades – grade A, B and C, while the differences in quality, aesthetic appeal and durability between them is enormous.

Grade A refers to the highest quality teak wood. It is taken from the center of the log or heartwood which contains very little moisture but lots of teak's natural oils. By choosing grade A teak garden furniture, you get all the benefits of teak for which it is so famous – outstanding durability, natural resistance to the outdoor elements, strength and no care required other than routine cleaning.

Grade B teak furniture is also made from heartwood but there is one important difference between this teak grade and grade A teak. While the latter is always taken from mature trees, grade B teak is obtained from semi-mature trees which are lower in oil content. This makes grade B teak garden furniture less resistant to the outdoor conditions because it is the teak's natural oils that make it outdoor-proof. This teak grade is also less durable in comparison to grade A teak.

Grade C is made from teak wood which is obtained from the outer parts of the log rather than heartwood. This teak grade is less strong and contains almost no oil but it contains high amount of moisture. Grade C teak furniture is of low quality and does not have much in common with teak garden furniture everyone are after.

Due to different quality grades of teak wood, it is possible to find teak garden furniture at very different prices. The price tag is sometimes also influenced by the design, however, it most often indicates teak grade as grade A teak wood is, unfortunately, considerably more expensive than grade C teak because it makes up only about one quarter of the log.

Although all pieces of teak garden furniture which are offered at suspiciously low prices are probably made from lower quality teak (C), you are highly recommended not to rely on the prices alone but read the labels very carefully or demand from the manufacturer or salesman to tell you exactly from which teak grade the garden furniture is made. Just as important is to pay attention to quality of workmanship because it does not only influence the overall aesthetic appeal of the furniture but its comfort, strength and durability as well. Take a close look at details or buy teak furniture from reputable brands which make furniture exclusively from grade A teak.
